I'm staining it the same color. I've already got most of it sanded except the trim with has little 1/2 inch niches in it. It will be hard to sand it without ruining the details and their shape. Can I leave them be? Or just sand them a little bit?

Try a little bit of stain in an inconspicuous part of the dresser, and see if you're happy with the results. You can always re-sand back to the same state and then go more detailed if you want.

I agree. Sanding it without using the proper tools will ruin the details. If you are certain that the new stain matches the original, just avoid doing anything with the trim detail and leave it. If you can't get a stain that matches really well, get a complimentary stain color so that the trim looks like the compliment and you "meant to do it" that way. It's better than having mis-matched stain colors or damaged details.

Because of the age of the wood, it will probably stain different from original color. If you sand a little bit, what is left is going to stain darker in those areas. My opinion: what do you feel looks good? You could try covering these areas with painter tape....then stain....

If you were to stiff brush the intricate part to get anything loose off or out, that would be sufficient for finishing..Use Clear Sanding Sealer as a finish, not polyurethane--which is why everything done recently looks odd, and everything old looks nice and glows. Two coats, fine sand, third coat done.

Depends on the look you are going for.
If you are after the distressed look it would probably be fine.
