They put on more clothes, so that it's harder to find people who look slim.

In cartoons, 'eskimos' look chubby because of their fur clothing, but they have always been very active people, and only get fat when they are limited to living in western-style settlements.

Christmas can be used as an excuse to overeat, but traditionally the extra effort involved in travelling about in the winter more than makes up for the increased energy intake.

I always gain ten pounds in the late fall and lose it come May or June. I hate it because I know I am not as active and that I do eat more but during this time of the year I never have that much energy especially once the time change comes around and it gets dark much earlier. I recognize it is my fault and that if I want to see those pounds gone during this time of the year too, I have to put some effort to make a change. I keep promising myself to start working out and eating healthier but things are sometimes easier said then done and eh, I know I'll lose it again come the summertime so its not really too big of a deal anyway.

Gaining fat in the early part of winter is a survival mechanism, but we achieve it by eating more. Fortunately, we don't have to starve through January any more, so we diet instead.
