No, but I live on the island right next to it!

Yes, I have been there as a missionary. All I can say is this. I have been to 13 countries all over the world, and Haiti is by far the most dangerous that I have been to. It doesn't take much to set off the people there, one wrong word or misunderstanding and you could end up dead. Do not travel alone or unless you have a connection already there. And by all means, do not drink the water. If you do, I can promise you, you will have instant malaria. All in all, it wasn't a bad country, just a place you have to always watch your back and be very careful with. The best advice is to stay with someone at all times from Haiti that you know. That will give you the best protection you can have.

Hope that helps.

Yes. It is an island which has an immense effect upon a person, as there is a degree of poverty there which is overwhelming, yet such cheerfulness in the people. We went in 2001 as part of a mission to build a school and have wanted to return ever since, but it becomes increasingly dangerous as each year passes. I have a link here which gives some idea of what is involved. http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:4zwEs6xWI3UJ:www.sptimes.com/2005/06/23/Worldandnation/Danger_arises_from_al.shtml+haiti+danger&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1 I live surrounded by Haitians and they assure me that it is indeed a very dangerous country to go to unless you travel to a resort, where you are well protected, but which would give you little idea of what the country is really like.

I have not been there, but I'd love to go. I think there's some security problems right now, but I think it's better than it was. There are flights into Port-Au-Prince from the US, or you can also enter the Dominican Republic and take a bus into Haiti from there.

If you do choose to go, please read the US State Department's information about travel to Haiti. Here it is: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1134.html
