Wingin' it is the only way to go. Cooking is an art form....I'll look at a recipe to see what those guys put in, but I like making the decisions myself. Thank God our kids will eat anything.

A combination of the above selections !!
I've gotten Sunset magazine since I was 18 (thanks Mom & Dad)... I will clip recipes from there. I have a number of cookbooks (Joy of Cooking, the Frugal Gourmet series, etc). I have a number of recipes from my Mom. I also watch a number of shows on Food Network... popping to their website for recipes.
I'll cook from the recipe once or twice... modifying to my tastes, and annotating my changes on the computer. Many recipes are in my head now. And sometimes I'll look in the fridge and either hit a recipe to match or just "wing-it".
I've actually complied ALL of my recipes into a cookbook for my family and friends... because most of my cooking is done by "handful", "pinch", and "3 second pours".

If it's a new recipe, I sort of follow the directions mostly. Just to see what they meant it to taste like. Then I can wing it the next time. So, mostly 1 and 3.
I don't care for prepackaged stuff that tells me what to do with it.

Combination of all of the above... If I buy a packet from the store, I usually add in some of my own spices so that it's tastier, same with cookbook recipes... I always end up changing them and subsituting ingredients for ones that I like better. And occasionally I just wing it and throw together whatever.

A mixture of all three. It depends on what I feel like. If I do use a recipe from a cookbook, I usually do something a bit different to it. Whether I add some extra garlic, jalopenos or whatever. Or if I am winging it, I'll just start with something basic like beef and rice and go from there.

All 3, but mostly I follow recipes from cookbooks or online. I will, however, mix and match recipes, or make my own changes. I just feel more comfortable starting with a base recipe.

I'm poor so I buy whatever I can afford that's not like mac and cheese or ramen noodles and I make whatever comes out of my mind. Ocassionally I find a recipe that sounds good and I figure out a way to make something similar but it's never quite the same cuz of the fact that I'm poor..... and picky

When I am just cooking like a meal, I usually just wing it. I will see something on the food network and then just make it how I think they did. A lot of times, I create my own meals and ideas. Now, when I am baking, like cookies, I use a recipe.

I use recipes in cookbooks for reference and ideas. Like, how long it will take to bake, broil or grill a cut of meat ect. But I generally wing it.
I follow the basic directions but will change flavors, herbs and spices to my preference.
