Poor old cat, they are so clean that he/she will hate doing this!

Others suggested a litter tray, if you don't already have one, that would help, fill it with Catsan and you cat will be happy to use it. Definately visit the vets though in case the cat is losing bowel control (you can probably work that out by keeping and eye on it), the cat needs to be checked out, or may need to go on different food. As cats get older they, like us, don't process food so well, it might be the case of chicken and fish/dry food only from now on!

Your cat is a real senior citizen, they need lots of tlc, which I'm sure you will give!

I have heard of older cats doing this before. In fact, my dad's cat is quite old and does this as well. The cat will walk up to the litterbox and poo right in front of it. It's almost as if the cat remembers something about pooing and the litterbox but doesn't remember to poo in the litterbox. I think it is senility because the cat is getting older. I have heard someone say what seemed to help for them was right after the cat pooed on the floor, pick the cat up and put them in the litterbox. Or perhaps pick the cat up, let it smell the poo and put it in the litterbox. Maybe it will associate pooing and the litterbox and remember it is supposed to poo in the litterbox. Good luck anyway.

Your cat is old now. First tell your vet. When my cat did this I put a small litter box on the carpet. Just a small one that you can put away fast if company. My cat used that small box and my problem was solved. I let her age. I used to wash her with kitty wipes to keep her clean. There really is no cure for it but making her life easy as an elder will make her smile and love you more before she dies.

As cats get older their world becomes smaller, you might have to invest in the old litter tray again. My 17 year Old moggy had same problem, but a litter tray fixed it for him, also get him checked at the vets in case a bit of senial dementia setting in as well, Good Luck TJ

awwwwwwww poorcat...17 is a great age!...treat her as you would an old person, theres not a lot you can do when your cat gets to this stage......You could try the litter tray but from experience with aging cats i doubt it will work at this time in her life.... Just buy some good cleaning products for now...from the pet stores, they work the best...

Had a cat did that. Just learned to live with a scrubbing brush at hand and accepted that none of my friends would visit.

She might be loosing control of her bowels.
Take her to the vet.
Or maybe shes just too old to get to the litter box.
Move the litter box to a easier area to get too.

She's getting older so that's what happens. Be patient with her and tolerant. Maybe take up the carpet.
