Golf clubs are very personal for each golfer,so I would suggest a gift certificate and allow him to pick out the ones he likes with input from the golf pro at the shop.

With him being 6'4", he would really need them custom cut to his desired length since "regular clubs" maybe a little short for him. Then again, since he is a hobby golfer, it may not matter (I'm 6'1" and use regular clubs).
Getting to a good brand as far as irons go, McGregor, Mizuno and Spalding make cheap sets and some good sets. I'd stay away from anything at Wal-mart or any other department store. Try Dick's Sporting Goods (www.dickssportinggoods.com) and look at the Tommy Armour sets. They are a mid-upper range club that perform very well. Being that he is a hobby golfer, stay away from "blades", they have a small sweet spot and are usually used by experienced golfers. Check your husbands current irons to see if he prefers graphite or steel shafts. Steel shafts are usually cheaper.
As far as drivers go, Tommy Armour, Taylor Made, Adams and Nike are good brands to pick from (once again, not from Wal-mart etc.). Hope I was able to help a bit.

I play a lot of golf and I absolutely agree with Racquel. A gift certficate is definitely the best way to go. Even though he may not play a lot of golf it's still extremely important that he is fitted for clubs and that the clubs he chooses are the best for his swing plane, swing speed etc. Most PGA teaching professionals will tell you that a lot of problems with amatuer players are attributal to them using the wrong equipment. Before buying the gift certificate visit a number of golf stores in your area and ask them how they fit clubs, if they have an indoor practice area so he can test the clubs out etc. and go with the one that seems to be the most helpful and knowledgeable.

Here are 5 ways to get a decent deal on clubs
1. The roger dunn golfstore near us sells demo sets which are still in great condition but about 25% to 30% discounted. Check the store locator if this company has a store near you; http://www.worldwidegolfshops.com/
2. http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/ offers great clubs and variety of prices depending on the condition (a good used golf club is still a good club)
3. Ebay the nike pro combo or slingshot sets often have a $399 purchase now button on ebay, a friend of mine bought one of these sets and loves them
4. Local golf stores often will often have used clubs in the store that were traded in or returned clubs, you might get lucky and fiend a nice set for a decent price,
5. Large chains like golfsmith will often have a home brand that are clones of brand models but at lower prices. These clubs might not have the name brand but i played for 6 years with a set like this and got down to hcp 10 and hit a hole in one with them)

If you end up buying him clubs a good deal would be a brand like Wilson or Ram because they are average price and good quality. You could also go to a local pro shop and ask for advice on what kind fits your personal budget. Nevada Bobs is a good golf shop chain to look for also.

hi your husband being a hobby golfer would mean he is just starting out to play golf, my advice is to buy a cheep set which you can pick up from as little as £85 pound upwards.
the reason for this is that if he goes out to play golf and finds its not his cup of tea then you haven't lost a lot of money. one other thing go to a golf shop and request to try out the swing room where they would be able to measure his swing speed, this will define weather he requires steel or graph-it but as a beginner cavity back would be strongly recommended as this allows room for error and improvement. hope this has helped.

If you can, ask his parteners what he want/needs. Also, go to a golf shop and tell them your price range and they can help.
