Surely privacy issues are being raised here, sure you'd like to spend hours looking at your own child on the interent but do you really want OTHER PEOPLE watching your child without you knowing??? Any parent thinking webcams in classroom are a good idea are crazy! If you want to find out what your childs school is like - volunteer to help out for a morning or two!

Such a question shows a lack of trust in our teachers and a lack of trust in our young people.
Teachers are there in a role known as 'loco parentis' once the pupil or student comes into the school; they take effective care of that young person. To install such cameras would be to undermine the role of the teacher and to break the trust the parent has with the school. Isn't this effectively a licence to snoop on their children?

Yes and no--I have no problems with webcams in the classroom, but not for the reason you think.
Should they be there for the direct benefit of snoopy parents? Nope. Even if, for the sake of discussion we exclude the fact that some parents *are* abusive and/or borderline abusive in their control-freakishness....
Point is, the internet already offers *way* too many distractions in the workplace as it is. Way too many people, otherwise good, hard-working people, are already addicted to the numerous distractions and diversions the 'Net has to offer. Getting the whole "watching the kids at school" thing going would just make it all worse for the adults trying to earn a living.
Not to mention....how would the kids be able to function at school, do their assignments, pay attention in class, or do anything at all if they KNEW for a fact that they were being watched over almost to the point of it being an "anal probing"? Teenagers are already cynical and paranoid enough as it is....and current issues in schools regarding bullying, shootings, cliques and in many cases *lack of funds* for genuine "school stuff" (books, desks, and the like) are already driving the *age* at which kids get cynical and paranoid *further downward*.
Some schools *already* have a really *BAD* habit of being so hair-trigger and paranoid that they'll put their students under "lockdown" at the drop of a hat, *call it that*, and generally treat the students like extras (bad guys that is) in an _Enemy of the State_ film. Do we really need to push the idea of schools as prison, and students as presumptive criminals, even further by getting said students *and also* their parents more paranoid?
But. But. Webcams do have a place in public schools. Provided they are used and watched over by a *trained* security person (or team for larger schools) Their rightful use should be the same as it would be for *closed circuit* cameras in the hallways: To protect the teacher from the rare violent student,to protect students in class from the really rare abusive teacher, to protect the students from the not-rare-enough bully, and to do it in a manner that does NOT involve "snitching" or "tattling" or otherwise *doubling* the shame or social stigma of being attacked.
I mean, a "Smile for the Camera" policy works just *fine* on other public property, like Courthouses, and in Public Housing common areas. Why? Because people know, if they act out and attack people, they *will be caught* regardless of what any potential victims or witnesses do, that once they're caught *On Tape* there is no blackmailing or BS-ing their way out of it.
Having an objective, professional third party discreetly watch for and call people on violent conduct in this manner is a time-tested method that *works*.....so why *not* use it in public schools? Are we so scared that maybe it might get rid of bullying? Or prove once and for all that Jocks ARE the Bullies 99% of the time?
What's up with that? ;)

Perhaps you should call yourself big brother, did you ever read 1984 by George Orwell? Who besides parents would be looking in? The nations paedophiles for one. Perhaps as well as webcams in schools you would like to see them in peoples homes? There is no way a thing like this should be allowed to happen.
Get real.

absolutely not, we dont need or want big brother watching in classrooms. are we going to install cameras in hospitals, in doctors surgeries? in fact, in every workplace? it shows a distinct lack of trust in teachers and a reluctance of parents to believe that their little darlings are anything other than perfect. how could you expect teachers and children to work under the constant glare of a camera? they havent signed up for a reality tv show.

No, that's too much. Kinda scary too. I read that they are soon going to use fingerprints to buy things at school such as lunch, check out books, and other things. And the fingerprints will be linked to the web so the parents can watch what their kids are buying. Too much control. It's getting closer and closer to the mark of the devil!

No problem - can I have a webcam of where you work so that I can check you're doing your job properly as well? Alternatively, how about in your home so we can check how well they are doing there? If that makes your squirm, maybe you should reconsider your point of view.

Great idea. Then when they complain that their 'little darlings' are well behaved at home they can see how the feral beggers behave around their friends. I can't wait for the Big Brother state to finally become a reality. As long as I'm in charge...
