like all words that become an extention of another word........ both "Christmas" and christian still retain the word "christ" in them but the meaning of the words changes. Both words still have lots to do with Christ.

Somewhere in the middle ages, the Roman Catholic church decided to create a holiday near the end of the calendar year to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Since church services in the Catholic church were call "mass" and this holiday was created to celbrate Christ the term "Christ-mass" or Christmas came into being.

The word Christian was first heard in the city of Antioch recorded for us in the Book of Acts Chap 11 v.26
And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

The followers of Jesus in the Book of Acts were always talking about "Christ in me" which is what Christian is literally translated.
Christian = Christ in me

so that's why the word Christ is not pronounced Christ in the words Christmas and Christian.

Hope that helps

That's just the way it is in the English language. You may have a word with a long vowel, yet an adaptation of that word will use a short vowel.

English is filled with all kinds of rules and exceptions to rules. You have a singular roof and plural rooves. Then you have a singular child and plural children--and note that the long i in the singular "child" becomes a short i in the plural "children"!

Christ [krahyst] is already an english adaptation of Christ's name from the greek name Christo (krĭs'tō). English words would usually have root words from greek and latin words.
