Depending on the terrain you are traveling. Large hills and mountain areas - may need to keep a set in the trunk just in case.
Only put them on when nessessary, and keep wheel speed low so as not to cause damage to tires or car.

no, not as far as road laws state you need chains or 4wd to drive over snow pass, plus most 4wd vehicles have to large of tire to fit any chains

AWD only gives you better traction than if you had 2wheel drive, but when you hit slush,ice, or snow.....it doesn't help you stop any faster than 2wheel drive. You have 4 wheels spinning instead of 2! just get the snow chains...it's a lot safer!
