They are very likely filling other prescriptions that came in before yours. Even if it looks like you are the only person at the counter, the vast majority of prescriptions are phoned in by doctors. Prescriptions are generally filled on a first-in, first-out basis.
Separately, even if the pharmacist isn't super-busy, they somtimes have to call to verify the prescription with the doctors office, and sometimes have to call to verify insurance coverage.
It's annoying to have to wait, but I promise you that they're not just sitting around specifically to make you wait for no reason.

It may not look like it but a pharmacist has a really hectic job, some work at a fast pace to keep up w/ the demand of customers, some work slowly to make sure things get done right. From the moment you put in your precription the process of checking past prescriptions, availability, labeling, counting recording and insurance which is a b*tch since time they don't approve of the drug most of the time or make up some kind of conflict and then we have to stay on hold for an hour fight w/ them etc. Half of the wait is just insurance. Even if the pharmacist doesn't look like they're doing something perhaps the tech made a mistake so he waiting on them before he makes it available, we're only human. Also, realize how many things the pharmacy has to keep up w/ doctor phone calls, patient phone calls, insurance, they just find out a patient is allergic so they have to call the doctor now and we all know how hard it is to get a hold of them, transfers from one pharmacy to another; that's a lot of verification going on.

Because the same rule applies to you at the pharmacy as it does in a restaurant, or any other service oriented business, where you're served in the order you arrived for service. First in ... first out! You wait because you aren't the first in line. Pharmacies get scripts phoned in from doctors offices and from people refilling prescriptions over the phone. Just because you happen to walk up to the counter doesn't mean they'll drop everything else to get you next!

Because they have to put you in the computer as receiving it, pull the medicine off the shelf, put it in a bottle, print a label, and then give it to you. If you are not the first one there, then there are people ahead of you.
