It irritates me when I get on a machine that nobody wants to be near...and as soon as I get on the machine, somebody jumps on the machine next to me despite their being 200 other empty machines just like it!
Then when I move away from them and to an isolated machine, they stare me down.
Why do people do that?

Hmm...from the answers it seems that people have taken some offense to my question. I'd like to know why...if you don't mind sharing that info with me. This isn't something at the gym either. If you choose a seat at the library, or parking space in a lot, or anywhere else, people do this too. I'm flattered by the "you're pretty" answers, but i'm average by anyone's estimation. I'm just trying to figure out why people want to sit where someone else is sitting. If they are sitting far away, that means they don't want to be around people. Why would someone then go all the way across the room and sit over there? They don't want to be a part of the crowd....Can someone pls explain that?

People have a natural desire to want to congregate together. And when someone see's one person doing something, especially if they are enjoying themselves or getting a good work out, they want to go try it out themselves. I'm not feeling very articulate today so bare with me.

I understand that you want to work out & be left alone while working out. There are days when I feel the same way. But when someone hops on a machine next to you & you then look at them, get off your machine & move to the same type of machine further away from them, people will find this insulting.

Do you find them that unattractive, what did they do to piss you off, do they smell bad...are some of the things they would be thinking. So of course they are going to stare at you, you were the one to commit the error in etiquette, not them.

I'm not saying what you did was wrong but you should realize that what you do could be very offensive to someone. Maybe you should have a nice tank or tee made for you & print the words on it 'I WANT TO BE LEFT ALONE WHILE WORKING OUT!' in big BOLD letters across the back. That way people will understand it has nothing to do with them, & everything to do with the fact that you don't like to be bothered or close to others while working out. Some people might think you’re a little stuck up or b***** BUT it would be better then doing something they perceive or may perceive as an insult.

It does sound like they might find you attractive, if they are coming to a machine near to you. However, there is something else to consider. There might be something on the other side of you that they are actually looking at. I have noticed when I sit near the door at a restaurant, it feels like everyone is watching me eat. It isn't me, but a lot of people have the tendency to watch the door. And at the gym, I had an experience where it felt like this man was watching me the entire time I was on the treadmill. When I got off of it, I saw that there was a television behind me that was on, but the volume was not on, and the text was running across the bottom of the screen, so he was having to watch very intently to read. Be aware of your surroundings and keep in mind that most people aren't aware of theirs, so they might not have any idea how it appears to you. But, if I were you, I might just stick with thinking it must be that I'm just hot! Have fun at the gym!

They think you're stuck up. I hate when people get on a machine next to me when the whole place is open.... I think some people just like to be close to others. However, at my gym there are 6 treadmills that are different than the other 30, so I always get on one of those six, regardless if the others are empty.. so ppl might think the same of me.

because you have a great personality and they want to get to know you better.
Maybe you smell really good. Are your teeth really straight?
do you have dimples?
you can't ask that question and not know that the gym is the place for the beautiful people to hookup? hmm that's universal, worldwide in every nation with exercise equipment. It's just that militant femminst in america haven't caught on yet. If you really want to workout buy a video and do it at home.

I think it means that you have a cute butt.

Or maybe you are a celebrity.

Or maybe you work out really professionally and people are looking for free tips.

Or maybe...a million other reasons

If the person is nice then strike up a conversation if not ignore him if he keeps bothering you and wont leave you alone then call the cops b/c he is stalking you.

Many gyms have become the singles bars of the '00's. You find people that are young and in shape. And excersise often hightens testosterone levels, a sex hormone that increases, well... horniness in men and women.
If you aren't interested, just ignore and they'll get the message.

Maybe you have the same problem as I do, you break wind frequently. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, it happens to the best of us.
Or perhaps they don't know how to use the machines and want to see how you use them.
Or your underwear is showing and they want to have a better look.

If you were beautiful you would already think that was the reason and not ask the question in the first place, so it must be human tendency to seek other humans and not be out there in "emptiness."

Sounds like you must be pretty cute! Just smile and turn your head. I know it's hard to ignore somebody that won't quit staring, but do your best. And give 'em a break, they apparently think you are hot! :o)

You must be very pretty. People like to be around beautiful people, they can't help but stare. How many people stare at plain or ugly women?
