NO! This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. If I where to go to another country, I would be expected to learn the language of where I was moving to. Not only because of its the correct thing to do, but how are you suppose to know what is going on with you and others if you cannot speak/understand the language of where you are living?

Why should we have even two languages? Language is the great unifier of culture. English is ours, and though it's not the official language, it unifies us. In any country where there is more then one official language, there are problems. The Soviet Union had over 100 languages. Take away the big stick of the government and "BOOM"...wars and break up. Canada and the French Nationalist movement. Bosnia and Serbia. Afghanistan. Most African countries. Shall I go on? It is time we realized that we DO have a culture, and we need to show how we are all similar and a part of the great mix of people that, combined, use our difference for a common good. We can't do that if we can't communicate with one another.

Oh my!
Sorry I couldn't resist.
I think any one can speak anything they want to speak.Just don't expect everything in English to be translated for you because you are too lazy to learn
English. The language that over 80% of America speaks
and a large percentage of the world.English is the
national language of money and business. Why wouldn't you want to learn it especially if you live in this predominately English speaking nation? I am a native born American ,not of any Hispanic decent but I speak Spanish and a couple more foreign languages.I do so by choice not by the force of any ethic group. If I were Mexican and lived in Mexico.I would expect anyone that came to Mexico to live ,to learn Spanish.
Why do you think you should expect legal Americans to accept your language. That must come from their choice not thru any force or pressure. That's ridiculous.

Yes, I firmly believe that Spanish should be a second language in the US. This is an opportunity that we have been passing up for too long. The United States is an anomaly in that it is so amazingly big but monolinguisitic. The advantages of being raised bilingual are tremendous. Employment opportunities are better, you're world gets bigger because you can travel to other countries and experience a different culture first hand as the natives do. Knowing more than one language is also associated with better brain activity. I for one can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would be opposed to learning a second language. Personally I was raised trilingual and have since picked up a fourth language. My wife speaks five. It is not difficult to learn a second language if you are surrounded by people who are speaking it. The spanish speakers are already in the country, why not take advantage of this remarkable opportunity?

Lions and tigers and bears oh my,
We are not that weak and the country is moving towards centralism the last election proved that. That is to say the Left did not take enough seats to make a difference for in the long run they will lose seats to wit they gained seats but not enough to hold the house or possible senate in the long term.
So we will unlikely be making any concessions as it were.

It already is! What needs to happen is that the U.S. must declare American English as the national language. Then all the bleeding hearts would have the proverbial wind knocked out of their sails and there wouldn't be any more question as to what language gets taught in our schools!

There should not really be a first language they are all great.
If you mean in America, there should be many languages and none should be considered first. The first language spoken in America was the language of Native Americans if you want to get that technical. Then since the SPANISH came here first with Colombus that was the second language spoken in America. But if you get even further into it the Vikings were really first so we should all be speaking Norwegian right now.
You people can be so upity about America. We are a country full of immigrants. There is not many of us that can say we are from here originally. Now we try to close our boarders because we are prejudice and full of hate. How can people in this country be so blind? They are us as we were when we first came here. Only we came on boats and they walk.
It is hard to believe that even a so-called man of G-d is prejudice.
Plus, the English that we speak today is so distorted from its original roots that it is ridiculous.

Base it on percentage of population. Spanish is by far the most common language spoken in this country, next to English. There is no reason why we can't have both as co-official languages.
