Turn your vacuum cleaner on right next to him when he's sleeping. If he doesn't react very violently then he probably has a hearing problem.

He may have ESP. Just kidding! He may not be deaf but he may be hard of hearing make a sharp noise behind his back and see if he responds if he does he heard of hearing and and can only hear sharp nosies but if he does not I am baffled too!

Maybe your cat is just ignoring you clapping behind it's back, so maybe it isn't.
Or if your kitten has very good smell and can tell when the food box is getting opened, it can smell it.
Hmm...

If he responds to his name try going into a diffrent room then him and calling for him, if he doesnt come maybe you should have a vet check him out. The whole can fooded thing could be because he smells the food right away.

If it can hear the can opener,,its not deaf.Try opening the can in another room & see if it responds. Maybe he knows the food is being served because you are in the kitchen.Maybe he just smells it? Hmmm.

White kitties with blue eyes are deaf because of a genetic abnormality. Does your kitten fit this description?

At first, I thought u asked, "How can I tell if my cat is DEAD?" But, yeah - check his eye colors and do some google research. Or take the pussy to the vets; they should know for sure. If it's an indoor cat then I wouldnt be too worried about it.

Does he come to the sound of you opening his food, or when you actually open it? (They can smell much better then we can).
Make a loud noise, shake a plastic bag when it's not looking at you or the bag and see if he moves.

he might be deaf but that doesn't mean he lost his sense of smell! he smells the food from another room, he doesn't necessarily hear the can being opened!

Bang two pots together behind the cat when he/she is sleeping. if it reacts, it's not deaf, if it does, then it isn't.
