I received many wonderful answers and they all dealt with using STROKE on each layer in regards to putting a border around a photo. However, what I am trying to achieve is... a thin/thick line with whatever color around a photo, but with the same background space between the line and photo. Using Stroke does not achieve this I think. Is there another detailed way of doing this? If Stroke is the answer, what do I do within Stroke to create this space between the line and photo? Thank you for your help.

I'm assuming that you are trying to mat your photo basically.

Try selecting the size of your photo, increase your selection by however much you want. Create a new layer under your photo, fill in the selection with what ever color you decide on, you can then repeat this process and get several different color boxes under your photo and will allow you a simple way of adjusting the size of the boxes. You can then texture or I like to enlarge my photograph behind the orginal then add a texture to it. It makes for a great look.

OK, try this:

Make sure the photo or image you want the line around is on it's own layer. Go up to SELECT, LOAD SELECTION. It'll give you a box asking what you want selected. Just hit ENTER without changing anything.
The image will now have a selection line around it. Staying in the SELECT menu, go to MODIFY; EXPAND, and type in the number of units out you need, and hit ENTER. You will see the dancing lines of the selection edge expand outward around the image.
Then just go up to EDIT; STROKE, and enter your parameters. You'll end up putting the stroke around the lines, outward from the picture.

hmmm i prefer to increase canvas size. with that, the base size is increased without the increase in the size of the image (if it's 800 x 600 it stays that way). if the pic seems too bigger now, click on image size and reduce it to its original. it's the fastest and most practical that i use. take care
