What is sin? To understand this word, let us consider the meaning it carried in the original languages of the Bible. The Hebrew and Greek verbs commonly translated “to sin” mean “to miss” in the sense of missing a mark or not reaching a goal. What mark do all of us miss? The mark of perfect obedience to God.

You refer to this verse: James 1:13 When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. 14 But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.

The verse specifically refers to wrong desires, one is disobeying God. Eve would be a perfect example, because she only heard the command of God from Adam, Satan put doubt into her heart, instead of leaving, she stared at the forbidden fruit and it looked delicious in her yes....the desire to know good and bad grew in her heart....she sinned by disobeying God. (see also desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes, desires incidental to youth)

The desire to be good is, on the other hand, encouraged in the Bible.

Since I am a Christian, whatever the Bible says is sin applies to me.Mankind has made things sinful that the Bible never addresses. In my opinion, if something like dancing makes you feel guilty, then it is a sin to YOU. Maybe not to everyone. It is not a sin to drink alcohol, but getting drunk is because it could possibly lead to other sinful activity.

Sin is any act that is against the Word and Will of God... if you are not a "believer" or follower of the Teaching of Jesus The Christ, then you are not bound by God's law. You may do whatever you damn well please, and can get away with under man's law. But, ultimatly, you will face God and answer to Him. Not for your sin, but for your rejection of Him... and at that time God will reject you and you will be eternaly seperated from Him... Then you will know The Truth but it will be too late for you.... Those who followed God will have eternity with Him in Heaven.... your fate will be not so good...most likly quite hot.
