First, I assume you have a seizure disorder. That being said, Dilantin has many side effects, most related to the central nervous system: Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) may also occur in people taking Dilantin, which blocks the release of insulin. People with diabetes may experience increased blood sugar levels due to Dilantin. To the point, the liver is the chief site of biotransformation of Dilantin and the liver is an important organ with respect to cholesterol. Increased cholesterol levels have been reported with Dilantin administration, however these are rare. If you have a seizure disorder, talk with you MD about changing medications, or adding a Statin to help control cholesterol and triglycerides.

This medication is usually used to control seizures, so I would strongly advise AGAINST stopping this med without first talking to your doctor. Phenytoin can affect your blood sugar but I don't find anyhting about itn affecting your cholesterol. Stopping fatty foods may be only one step towards lowering your cholesterol. Try adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. If possible, stay away from prepackaged convenience foods. Talk to your doc about getting a referral to a nutritionist. Also....see if you can find out the "breakdown" of you cholesterol number. HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides all contribute to that "high number." My "whole number" is 223 but my doctor isn't worried because my HDL is high (good cholesterol) and my LDL (bad cholesterol) is low.

It is the wrong medicine you are taking. Phenytoin is for generalized tonic-clonic seizure.

This medicine is used for "management of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal), simple partial and complex partial seizures; prevention of seizures following head trauma/neurosurgery; ventricular arrhythmias, including those associated with digitalis intoxication, prolonged Q-T interval and surgical repair of congenital heart diseases in children; epidermolysis bullosa."
