Well because bellybuttons are a cavity and clothes lint, dust and grime tend to fall in and get stuck in the oily bodily excretions. You just have to douche the smelly little hole out every now and then.

Because they're a depression and the dust from clothing, etc. settles there. As for lent, belly buttons don't get involved with that until Easter when the Easter Bunny jams eggs in while you're sleeping.

the simplest answer is it is the dirt and fabric wearing off as the material rubs against the skin. Your belly button is a human lint trap just like one in a dryer.

Your clothes release lint and your body sweats and since it's like a little ditch, it all gets trapped in there.

probably not dust but lint and soap and dead skin, I know that is gross but true you can clean it
