it is not neccessary to do this, plenty of highly advanced beings can achieve a deeper connection to God and still have sexual relations.
i also think that the idea came from the belief that you are to be married to God- and not give any of your attention away to a family or lover.
i believe that while in the past, the monastic life was a faster track to achieve spiritual oneness, nowadays- to be present in life and the opportunities for growth that any relationship offers is the new path to enlightenment. to be in the world, but not of it.

Honestly speaking the purpose for celibacy is so you wont have kids distracting you while you meditate. Children are great but when you realize you live for thousands, maybe even billions of years you realize that its pointless to have children to carry on the next generation because you are the next generation when you reincarnate. If you awaken your sex/root chakra you wont get as *frisky* as you whould if you let yourself go without awakening your chakras.
