+ Each branch has it's benefits and detriments.
Army (if you like camping out)
Navy (if you like traveling by ship)
Air Force (if you like planes)
Marines (if you like embassy duty)
Coast Guard (if you like to stay close to shore)

You are going to recieve some really biased answers on this. Bottom line is do your research. Every branch has the same BASIC benefits, the pay is the same, the medical, dental, housing Ext is the same, the variations depends on what fits your needs and wants. The Army has the best promotion system, the Air Force has a better quality of living things like that, want to stay on a boat for months at a time? then go Navy, make a list of what YOU want to accomplish with a Military career, then compare your list to the benefits of each service, Good luck and God Bless

I've been a Navy Recruiter for almost 3 years now and people ask me all the time which branch of service is the best. Well, it really depends on you. No one branch pays more than the other, pay goes by rank. Bonuses vary and they depend on the manning level so if a branch really needs people in a particular job, the bonus will be bigger, however, please, never base your decision on a bonus. When I decided to join the military I spoke with the the recruiters in each branch to see which one would best meet my needs. It's good to talk to people who've been in the service, however, only if they've been successful, they have the best advice on how to do well. Research their websites and see what they have to offer. Yes, as a Navy recruiter, this is the advice I always give.

It all depends on what you want out of life: The Army has a lot of military occupations to choose from, so does the Navy. The Air-Force has a good school program set up for after you serve.
And now the best for last - The Marines are the most motivated, dedicated, hardcore, honorable, handsome, great, toughest, squared away, glorious, fearless, valiant, unselfish, team oriented, group you will ever find. Ever. They also have a good school program upon completion of you duty. I often look back and wish I made a career out of it.

The Army, more job opportunities and easier promotions. Plus you will get to see the world. Don't join the military because of what people here have said about, this or that being easy. Join the one you feel like suits you best. I was in the Army for 4 years and it was the best experience of my life. The basic is harder than Navy and AF basic. Thank you for even considering joining one of the service branches. Believe me when I tell you, you will not regret it!

First, THANKS for SERVING!

The thread is "What do you want out of it"

I enlisted in the Navy right after HS because I was a squeeky "C" and there were no JC's. So I went for an education that would translate to civilian life. I wanted to be a photographers mate but the Navy decided that electronics was what I was going to learn. I got out, went to college and have worked in electronics for over 30 years.

Sure I went Navy because I didn't want to run through the jungle getting shot at in the process; that plan didn't totally work though.

I have a TOTAL respect for ALL branches of the Service but they all have specific mission statements; the Army and Marines are obvious and the Air Force is pretty clear too. The education is focused upon that mission.

Now take the Navy. Imagine a ship longer than two football fields at sea for 72 days (yea did that) and it becomes a CITY on the water. ANY job that you can find in the civilian world can be found on a Navy ship. Then you have EW, weapons, navigation, electronics, barbers, cooks and anything else that you can imagine because the SHIP is self-sufficient 98% of the time.

The Navy sent me to electronics, gunfire, EW, anti-submarine and Leadership schools and when I look back it was EXCELLENT!

I was in Operations and Intelligence and that taught me how to analyize complex situations and mass amounts of data to come to a logical conclusion.

I was a section leader at 18 and learned leadership.

I also spent some time in-country and learned how to manager fear, read the limitations of my body and still perform. I also learned how to perform on 2-4 hours sleep in 24 which was a HUGE help in college when I was holding down a full time management job in electronics.

When I was waiting for discharge I was assigned permanent Shore Patrol and got HUGE training in "Conflict Management".

I think that the large diversity of transferrable traing to civilian life that the Navy offers is a LARGE advantage over the other branches.

Before I was discharged (1968) the Navy offered me $20,000 to re-enlist and NECP (Naval Enlisted College Program) That is 4 years at the college of your choice with an approved major, you become an officer and give them another 4 after you graduate. I passed on their offer because I was DUMB as a BRICK at 20-years old. Then they offered me a World Cruise on a newly commissioned ship and elevation by one rank to E-6; I passed on that too.

The Navy was the first time in my life that I was really able to EXCEL! They allowed me to reach my potential without a bunch of BS and I have carried that knowledge through my life.

Here is a little advice. Stay squared away, LISTEN before you talk and learn to follow ORDERS before you attempt to give them! Earn the respect of your TEAM and they will FOLLOW when you are given the opportunity to become a LEADER.

The BEST and THANK YOU!
Jacques, Nam 1965 - 1967.

It depends what you want to do. The Navy would probably have the smallest chance of death, though the least "exciting," for lack of a better word. The Marines and Army are the most dangerous and see the most action. If you have good vision and can fly, then you could join the Air Force. Of course, there's always the chance that you won't end up fighting anyway-you could be doing communications or something.

It depends on what you want to do careerwise. Also, if location is important, you can find out where the various locations are for each service. In the past, Air Force had the best living quarters, but that is all changing now.
Navy is typically on the coasts. Marines are often in the dessert.
Talk to all the recruiters from each service. After you take the ASVAB, make sure any promises are in writing before signing on the dotted line.
Good luck

Air Force....and unlike another poster said you do not get paid more (all branches of service go by the same pay scale) but they do have more money to spend on things like newer equipment, better facilities, janitors, busboys for the cafeteria (they didn't call it chow hall like the army did)....I'd definately say Air Force

Marine Corp and the Navy are the two best one. The Marine Corp is the hardest but they are the best. The Navy kicks ***. Army is ok not the best though and the Air Force while they are weak not that great

Really, it depends on the type of job you are after. Even if you join the air force, you may end up no where near an airplane, and in the same places with the army, so choose carefully..
