A metaphor is the expression of an understanding of one concept in terms of another concept, where there is some similarity or correlation between the two.
A metaphor is the understanding itself of one concept in terms of another.
You already possess whatever you truly desire. (A brain, a heart, courage, or away home) You have the power to control your self, your life and the situations you find yourself in. (The ruby slippers, courage, intelligence.)” This is much like the doctrine taught by many religions. You are already spiritually fulfilled; you just have to open yourself up to the realization that you are what you are.

I believe it could be a metaphor for the Atheist movement. The scarecrow, lion and tin man all lack something they believe they need like a spiritual hole. The promise of the divine "wizard" to fill what is lacking by magical powers is a direct metaphor for religion. The characters find strength, courage, love and whatever else they needed as they went down the yellow brick road which I think could represent life. The horse of a different color could symbolize a constant changing of interpretations in the religious doctrines. While the constant belief that the wizard as an all powerful and god like entity is expressed and believed to be true by all of Oz's inhabitants which shows that even though something is largely believed by society does not mean it is true or valid. As we know at the end of the road (life) we find that the wizard (the church, bible, pope) is a fake. He attempts to fool us, and even when he is exposed as a mere man continues to try to deceive us and scare us into believing a lie. He tries to frighten us but when we thru his ruse we receive and obtain everything we are told we lack and dislike about ourselves. The movie ends with Dorothy waking up not in a fantasy but in a reality and she is left with the knowledge of true freedom and scientific thought and is not one who will be so easily fooled.

The Wizard of Oz is a metaphor for "choosing life" --- The story of being in a coma and having the choice -- struggling to recover --- Evil witch is death; Good witch is life; wizard is God, Toto love -- Heart, Courage, and Brains are all elements and tools of the battle. What it takes to win and live. It all takes place in liminal place between death and life.

Some scholars have theorised that the images and characters used by Baum and Denslow closely resembled political images that were well known in the 1890s, specifically in relation to the gold standard and the populist movement.

That if we have heart courage and a mind, we can accomplish the impossible. All of which came from a higher power. Although, he used what talents they already had, but hadn't realized.
