a true atheist is a person who does not believe in the existence of god. he does not choose the path of confrontation nor does he show interest in convincing others to follow his path.a true atheist, who is armed with rational thinking and scientific temper never pokes his nose in to the religious beliefs of others. he believes that every person has his own beliefs and another person should not interfere in the affairs of other people.in ancient India, theists and atheists coexisted peacefully and there were no blood baths because of beliefs in god and atheism.that is the greatness of ancient India.

Yes they can, they can also condemn the actions of famous characters like Captain Ahab and Freddy Kruger. Does it make it right? Well that is a personal issue. If characters are said to represent the emotions of the writer then why not? What do people have against independent thought? They especially have the right to think critically about holy books, being that it is likely they live in a country where the majority of people hold said book in high regard. In short, their is nothing wrong with thinking critically, especially about religious issues. The definition of right and wrong, or okay varies from person to person because of their personal histories and unique perspective. We should respect the right to free speech as well.

>> actions of God
Which are really actions of people who believe in god...
>> Doesn't that make it okay to call God out on murdering all the humans and animals and unborn babies on earth in a flood (except Noah's boat), and calling for the murder of babies in their sleep, and allowing Satan to torture Job and kill Job's family for no reason?
Not really, since we all know none of those things *actually* happened. Although, just as the Captain points out above, we sometimes will assume those things *did* happen, just to draw out a contradiction or an absurdity. (Formally called an "reductio ad absurdum" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum ).

It's a fine line there. It's the line between criticizing people who believe in something you consider absurd and criticizing the thing they believe in. It's fine to criticize God as a literary figure. People do that all the time with fictional characters, like criticizing Hamlet for hesitation which made a bad situation worse. But when you start criticizing God for actual occurrences, you can't really say you don't believe in him anymore. You just don't agree with him.

It seems to me that an atheist condemning the actions of God is very hypocritical. It would make more sense to condemn the followers of God for believing that God had anything to do with it in the first place.

Doesn't happen. It's a rhetorical position. If someone asks me what I think about the Book of Job and I say that such a spiteful, petty god isn't deserving of respect, let alone worship, I'm entering the hypothesis to comment from within. Acknowledgeing the existence of the idea isn't to acknowledge the existence of the entity.

how can there be real consequences if the character is fake? that's like saying if you believe in lenny, in the book of mice and men, you have to choke puppies to death...pretty ridiculous isn't it. i don't condem ppl for believing in god. i don't have proof any of it existed, the religion didn't originate on this continent, it's not a part of my native frame of reference. i won't blindly follow a doctorine that has no proof behind it, and where it's "leaders" have to use condemnation and fear in order to keep their flock in line...i think for myself and look inside myself for guidance and accountability in my life...you can look back throughout history, and identify all the "men of god" who've been very creepy human beings. you have reinforced my non-belief with your odd statements.

Only God could answer that. Ask him when you die. If there is no such thing as God then those things never happened. Are you mad or something? Those are big words to call the Alpha and Omega.

Yes it is okay...there is no law against it.
I can also criticize the actions of Col Nathan Jessup or Michael Corleone, two more fictional characters I don't really believe in.

I don't know any Atheists that say, "Your god did this..."
I hear, "if your god was real, WHY would he do this..." or "your bible talks about an evil god...why would you worship this"
I think you are sadly mistaken that we actually condemn him. We just use those arguments when people shove an "all-knowing, all-loving" god in our face to prove that while HE DOESN'T EXIST, their logic and reasoning is flawed.
Much like yours.
