Yes, regrettably. What it is is mutilation and needless pain.

It became traditional in the US not due to health factors but because it was though to prevent masturbation.

In some, very few, cases it is done for medical reasons, generally in some cases it doesn't retract properly. As far as cleanliness, nothing a bit of washing wouldn't take care of if left intact.

As for less risk of HIV|AIDS - there are probably plenty of men infected in the US that wish that were so, as most of them would have been circumcised. That study was in Africa where it is a true epidemic and just one factor. There also it did seem to be a cleanliness factor - the folds allow the virus to survive longer - but really there is an educational and preventional factor that needs to be addressed.

Female circumcision is plain mutilation practiced in a very few regions. It has pretty much been outlawed but some cultures still do it.

They can get circumcised. For non-religious regions.

It used to be done Standard at the hospitals for health reasons.

Now people no longer see a health need, cause it's supposed to be just as clean either way I guess.

And alot of guys protested sort of, against the idea that they were given no choice in the matter. They say it can have some drawbacks, like a lack of sensation.

So I don't think it is an automatic operation at the hospitals anymore. Not sure about that.

YES, most christians do. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin (the skin that covers the tip of boy's penises).

Now some information on circumcision. Keep reading...

CIRCUMCISION IS VERY BENEFICIAL, its cleaner and several research bodies have concluded that circumcised men have less risk of contracting STD's such as AIDS-HIV or herpes.

Uncircumcised penises are difficult to keep clean, and more prone to infections and penile cancer, studies have shown.
A circumcised penis is naturally clean and virtually free from urinary infection. You will not have to worry again with careful washing of your penis.

Is it NOT true that the AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) does not recommend circumcision. They simply say they leave the decision to parents. But recently, and specially after the New Zealand study, the AAP has been discussing if it may be necessary to change their policy and recommend circumcision to all newborns as they used to do, so in the future we may see that the AAP advocates again circumcision.
Have a look at: http://www.baby-health.net/articles/381.html

About STD's:

As I said, several studies carried out by prestigious research bodies have concluded that uncircumcised penises are more prone to infections and contraction of STD's, including AIDS-HIV. Circumcised men have been proved to be up to seven times less likely to be infected than those who are uncircumcised. Have a look at this site: http://icuxbridge.icnetwork.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=14095142&method=full&siteid=53340&headline=-circumcision-protects-against-aids--name_page.html

As for women, studies also show that circumcision also protects female partners from AIDS-HIV and other STD's. Browse this article: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2006/02_08_06.html

About sensitivity of a circumcised penis:

No medical or physiological study has proved that circumcision reduces sensitivity, opposed to common belief. It is completely FALSE that circumcision reduces penis sensitivity. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) confirms this on their web site; have a look at: http://www.aap.org/pubed/zzzjzmemh4c.htm

Circumcision is an easy and nowadays *painless* procedure, which has many benefits, and virtually no risks.
Circumcision is NOT an amputation. Circumcision is NOT comparable at all to female circumcision, which is something completely different.

Circumcision rates are INCREASING nowadays, both in the United States and overseas. Many African and South American countries with little circumcision tradition are starting to promote the procedure to help to reduce the AIDS-HIV infection rates.

Finally, this site has a lot of useful and *unbiased* information. Make sure you have a good look: http://www.circinfo.net

Males are circumcised in western world at birth mostly. Not much to do with religion. They ask parents at birth and most doctors say it is good for hygiene. They remove the foreskin from around the head of the penis. If men are uncircumcised then the foreskin must be pulled back for cleaning. I have worked in nursing homes and we had this guy who was uncircumcised and had not been cleaned between foreskin and head of penis. It grew together and was very nasty. He had to have surgery.
Most all of western cultures circumcise these days without regard to religion.
Also I should mention that there are guys who have it put back on saying that it improves sexual pleasure to be uncircumcised.

it has to do more with HEALTH ISSUES than with religious issues.

The Isrealites were commanded in the Law (mosaic law) to circumcise their male offspring on the 8th day.

Why, the eighth day? Well, NOW science understands that on the 8th day a newborns immune system is at it strongest. Case Closed!

It served as a sign for the Jews. They were separated off from other nations by the act of circumcsion as well as modes of dress and other things.

That explains it as best as I know.

Good Question too!

Yes, but generally not for religious reasons, or at least not anymore. I'm not entirely sure why, but somewhere along the line it became standard medical practice in many western countries. It most likely was initially done as a nod to Christianity's Jewish past. Over time it morphed into a hygenic practice instead. It's generally done by the doctor who attends the birth and is entirely optional.

Circumcision is not a requirement to be a Christian. Having the procedure performed is strictly a personal decision. Female circumcision is a cruel and inhumane procedure. God would never approve of that.

Yes, many parents choose to have their boys circumcised for health reasons and it often has nothing to do with religion. In the Jewish religion though, there are only extreme cases where Jewish boys are not circumcised. But many Christians choose to do it because they want to, and there is nothing to stop them doing that.
