If it would have caused them to set them free without a war it would have probably been better. We still hate the yankees now after 140 years and continue to vote against Yankees instead of 4 issues.

No because the slave owners fathered so many of the sons born in slavery. Better to let them deal with the mixed emotions surrounding the fact that their own children are in slavery.
