Poems: American Reflections?

Question

I need a poem exploring a specific historical event that has influenced the United States. Any ideas on supjects? I'm looking for something written in a free verse style or a proes style.

Whitman wrote several poems about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. "O Captain My Captain" and "When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom’d" spring to mind. He also wrote extensively on the Civil War, all of which would be in 'Leaves of Grass'.
