I have been told that the correct way to hug is with our head to the right. I however, find it more often that not to be the opposite. Is there a correct side to hug to? Also, I have also been told that male/female hugs must be more upper chest to upper chest to avoid full belly to belly contact. Seems to make sense.

Anyone else been told this or anything different?

Curious.

I never heard of the etiquette of hugs!
Man I just hug with my heart and I always thought that it was the best way. I didn't know there were rules to go with it!

Always respect another person's space.
Ask permission when you need or want to share a hug.
There is a difference between a warm, friendly hug and a passionate embrace- please hug accordingly.
A hug is a gentle embrace- not the Heimlich.
Techniques
Some huggers pat while hugging. Others simply hold and embrace. Gently rub the back of your huggee and they'll be back for more!

Me-Hug

A great way to start the day and whenever you need or want a hug. Warm-up your hugging muscles with a real good stretch by wrapping your arms around yourself!

Hand-Hug (aka the Reserved Hugger's Hug)

This is the most common and frequently shared hug... a simple handshake.

Side-to-side Hug (aka the Buddy Hug)

Huggers stand or sit next to one another, embracing around the waist or shoulders.

A-frame Hug

Huggers stand about a foot and a half a part, bend at the waist.... only the shoulders touch as you embrace!

Back-to-front Hug

Gently wrap your arms around huggee's waist and embrace. Always let your huggee know you are behind them.

Cheek-to-cheek Hug

This hug requires no arms. Simply face your huggee and press your cheeks together. Face the same way for the Kodak Moment Hug.

Custom-tailored Hug

To insure a high-quality hug, whenever a taller hugger hugs a smaller huggee. The taller hugger should bend at the knees to come eye level with the huggee and embrace.

Bear Hug

This is a full body hug. Hugger and huggee are toe-to-toe and belly-to-belly.

I've never noticed, but it seems to me that I most often end up hugging to the left also, but I'm sure it doesn't make a difference, as long as you don't bash your head into the person you're hugging. As for that belly-to-belly thing, I would think it's more important not to squish their breasts than worry about tummies touching. I think the most important part of hugging ettiquete is not to hug too hard if the other person isn't hugging you hard. Some people just don't want to be squeezed that hard.

I don't think there is any "correct" way to hug. I mean, if you hug another way, the hug police aren't going to come along and arrest you. No one is in charge of telling people how to hug. However, in the place where I live, it is customary to hug with our head to the left of the other person's head, so that our right cheeks are close to each other. If I try to hug another way people wouldn't expect it, and that could lead to an awkward "dance". The only time I've purposely hugged to the right is when I talked about it with the person first.

As far as male/female, I don't want to put any restrictions on that.

Never heard that before. I tend to hug to the left, chest to chest, with no belly contact. LOL . That's sounds funny. I often wonder where to place my arms though. So I hug with my right arm on the upper back and my left arm on the lower back.

I don't pay attention to how my head is when I hug, but I think it might automatically go to the right. If I'm not THAT close to someone, I'll do the slanted hug so that my right arm is above their left arm, and my left arm is below their right arm. But most of the time, since I'm short, I'll go under both of their arms and give em a big bear squeeze!! And yeah, chests and bellies touch! And I don't care. 80)

hmmmm i was unaware of "hug etiquette," however i think it depends on the situation. If you don't know the person, chest to chest seems appropriate. However, I'm a huge fan of the total bear hug :) I don't think it matters which side, whatever feels more natural in the situation

I hope there are no rules. I just go with whatever seems comfortable at the time. A lot of times though I won't get all the way up to them (i.e. only shoulders touch). But that's mostly because I'm not sure either. Some people get creeped out over stupid stuff.

This is so stupid. I've never heard of such nonsense.

Everything is becoming so "controlled" and "pre meditated". Whatever happened to "whatever comes natural"?

Isn't that what hugs were originally meant for?
Can we put a correct way to be "sincere" too while we are at it?

Sorry just tired of the way society is becoming so politically correct and we are becoming so "mechanized" in our ways its paralyzing.

Have a Happy Holidays!

I don't know the correct way, but it sure looks funny when people hug from the waist up and stick their butts way out to avoid bodily contact below the waist. I think it depends who you are hugging also.

The only thing that my Aunt ever told me that sticks with me today is that when you hug someone that you love or care about, Do not pat them on the Back when hugging, you should hold them not pat them. As far as the other stuff you should just do what feels right.
