I volunteer in a place like that. Some good things are: Chocolates. New bedspread with matching pillows. A boom box with a few CD's of her favorites. A DVD player and a few movies. A scrap book of all her favorite pictures unless looking at pictures depresses her. New slippers and a robe. These are what I can think of. But.......... I have to say this, from volunteering at these places the best thing you can give your mom is your time. Take her out of there at least once a week, even if its just to drive around town. They have activities at the facility but there is nothing like getting away from the people you are forced to look at every day. Good Luck!

I'm an only child too with just my Mom being the only parent alive. At this stage of her life it's about basic needs then wants. Go and spend the entire Christmas Day with her, that will mean more to her then any gifts (things).

there are several things you could get her. What does she like? You could get slippers & robe, or night gown, candy, homemade treats, movies, books if she likes to read. gospel music , or what ever genre she prefers, arrange a phone call from a distant relative or friend, I.O.U. coupons like ones that you could make promising her a day out to a movie or dinner with you, a day at a spa for the both of you, a necklace or bracelet, make her a photo album of her loved ones & special memories, take her to church.....just use your imagination since you know her best & you know what she likes. I can totally understand where you are coming from, I am an only child & my dad passed away 2 years ago.
But above all...spend time with her & make her feel important & loved!
Good luck & God bless.

I would get CD made of all their songs! Maybe make a quilt with pictures of Dad, you and maybe favorite things from their marriage. like honeymoon picture, black and white. They do have a place where they take the picture and enlarge in on a square size material. Put a heart in the middle. So when at night she have her special blanket to warm her-reminds her she is loved! you and your Dad are there!!! It is a lot of work, but if she has friends, siblings who have special moments-make their own square and than put it together. It is easier to asked her friends, sibling for help. make it easier and fun!!
Good luck!!! I know how you feel, my Dad passed away too!My Mom is doing okay!!!
merry christmas & happy new year!
Cheers!!

Card. Maybe a family photo if you have children/spouse or significant other. People who live in facilities rarely get to see the ones they love frequently. A picture is a great gift so they could see you/family everyday.

Very simple gift to meet her interests. Most importantly TIME spent with her. Thus, allowing her opportunity to not dwell on her lonliness.

They love warm-up suits.

They're comfortable and easy to get in and out of.

They also wash well.
