I want to buy a really nice bottle of wine, under $50 for one of my aunts. Advice? Sophisticated taste.

Robert Parker is the foremost wine authority on the planet. His rating system (oddly enough) has been accepted worldwide, and if he says a wine is a '92', baby, it's gonna knock your socks off!

The URL above is for "the wines of the week" and is a good place to start for your Aunts. If you want some more latitude,

this is the vintage chart. Take a second and pick out the gold and Hot Pink vintages... You can bet that almost any bottle in these categories of these years is going to be wonderful, if not an outright world-beater!

Lucky Aunt you've got there!

Best wishes!

I'd stick with domestic wines (read: California) for under $50. Since you're not paying import fees, you can get a much nicer bottle for the cost. Cakebread does a good chardonnay, but I much prefer Far Niente's, which is just over $50 ($52, or $44ish for wine club members).

If she's a red wine drinker, and you can find it, I highly recommend Robert Biale's Black Chicken Zinfandel. It's an amazing wine.

For $50 you should be able to buy a couple of very good bottles of wine. I would go with one red and one white.

If you have a local winery, those make good gifts as they are less widely distributed and therefore more unique.

There are two absolutely excellent California Red Zinfandels that I would highly recommend. One is called Seven Deadly Zins, the other Farleigh Red Zinfandel. Go to www.winelibrary.com and order. They have good prices - the Seven Deadly Zins usually runs about $20/bottle but they have it for $12.99. I am very choosy about my wine and these are my two favorites.

The best white I have ever had was a Cakebread Chard. Cost is about $45. as for a red look for a Martin Rey Merlot if you can find a 91 you will rock cost is about $37

It really depends on her taste, but a Traminer Riesling is usually a safe bet. It is a dry, semi-sweet white wine.
