What's the best FREE site to find where my family came from?

Go to LDS.org and click onto the Family Search link. It is the largest single data base for family records.
Hamrick.com gives information about the origins of family names and how they disbursed over America in the last 150 years.
Ancestors.com is the largest commercial web site for family history research. They have a two week free introductory license. After that, it gets expensive.
For live assistance, go to the yellow pages and look up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Center. There should be one near you. They have people assigned to help anybody that comes in. I know because I am one of them.

Your family ... go to the elders of your family first and obtain as much information as you can .. did they come from Italy, Germany..etc .. what do they remember

If your going start hitting roots web and the like first and being a newbie your only going to get confused ... start closer to home ..

fortunatly the mormons have a wonderful archive of Americans and their faimlies.. I believe that you can find what you want on line by searching the mormon church site.. jI am not sure exactly what the search criteria is, but if you do some digging I think you will find it.. good luck.. Oh by the way.. you nor anyone in your family need be a mormon..

familysearch.org is the best free site. You can also download for free the Personal Ancestry File (PAF) program.

sure, and my relations doesn't somewhat care, till do it on my mom's workstation, because she doesn't have the secret agent ware protection element like another workstation that i'm on does. have an excellent day :)
