There's also a book called something like The Firehouse Cookbook. A bunch of firemen put together this cookbook of things they cooked on their rotations at the firehouse.
Allrecipes.com sells their own cookbooks with really easy to make recipes. BH&G and Betty Crocker are good starter cookbooks too. So is the "365" series.
Glad to know you want to learn, always remember the majority of chefs are still men!

Try the starving student cookbooks. They are really simple and economical. Many recipes build upon pre-made things, like dressing up frozen pizza.
Go to a library nearby and look through cookbooks, there are always a lot of simple, quick meal cookbooks available.

I started cooking with the good old Betty Crocker cookbook. The recipes are straight forward. try that. In the meantime, here is a recipe I have found works wonderfully to separate a woman from her underpants. It has very few ingredients, is relatively easy to prepare and tends to impress:
SAFFRON ORZO WITH ASPARAGUS AND PROSCIUTO
Yield: 6 servings
4 Tablespoons butter (1 /2 stick)
2 ounces thinly sliced prosciuto, cut into thin strips (think Italian ham)
1 1 /4 Cups Orzo (about 8 ounces) (where they keep the pasta)
3 Cups low-salt chicken broth
1 /2 teaspoon (loosely packed) saffron threads, crushed (look in the spice aisle)
1 pound slender asparagus, trimmed, cut into 1 /2" pieces
1 /4 Cup grated Parmesan Cheese
Parmesan Cheese Shavings, Optional
1. Melt 2 Tablespoons butter in a large, non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add prosciuto and saute until almost crisp, about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain.
2. Melt 2 Tablespoons in the same skillet over high heat. Add Orzo; stir 1 minute. Add broth and saffron; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until orzo begins to soften, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Add asparagus; cover and simmer until tender, about 5 minutes. Uncover and simmer until almost all of the liquid is absorbed, about 1 minute. Remove from heat.
3. Mix in prosciuto and 1 /4 cup of the grated cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a large bowl. Garnish with the Parmesan shavings.

There are different levels of cookbooks. Some are pretty tough, and some are fairly easy.
Try this website:
http://allrecipes.com/
You can look at tonnes of recipes, and find ones based on ingredients, and most of them have ratings and useful suggestions in the comments.
