Baby blankets
Diapers
Rattles
Onesies

All the little things a baby needs....wipes, powder, Desitin, baby wash, etc.

And a nice card.

You could also give her something for herself, to make her feel like a woman again.....some nice bath and body stuff.....shower gel and lotion perhaps.

Or, good old fashioned flowers!!!!

Onesies! Every mother of a newborn that I have known swears that they can't have enough of these. It is the one gift that even if several people gave her, it would still be a one thing. If you live in a town that has a pro team or a college team that everyone roots for, it might spice it up a little to get them with the team logo. But even if they are basic white, new mothers-to-be don't necessarily know to ask for them, but they realize once they have the baby that they just don't have enough of them.

baby clothes and other times.
Maybe you can make her a meal that she can easily reheat for when she comes home from the hospital. She's going to have a lot to do with taking care of the baby, so making a hot meal for herself will be the last thing on her mind. It can be something easy like spaghetti or fried chicken or something that you bought. It's the thought behind the action that counts.

I always liked the little terry cloth stretchy one piece outfits with feet. They're easy to get off and on and you can get them in many sizes. I would get a larger than newborn size so the baby can grow into it. If you don't know the sex of the baby yellow and aqua are always appropriate. I would stay away from white because it will stain too easily.

You could find out if she's registered somewhere, that would tell you what she really wants. After I delivered, I really appreciated gift cards to places like Target, Babies R Us, Border bookstore, etc.

If you're a good cook, you could drop by a couple of heat-and-serve meals for her. That was something that was really helpful after the baby came simply because we were ordering out all the time for the first couple of weeks.

It's the thought that counts and she'll be happy with whatever you think of, I'm sure.

I'd say a mixture of pratical and playful. Maybe a gift bag with diapers, baby powder, wipes, etc along with a ratte or a cute toy. I'm sure she'll be grateful if you give her something she can use.

Silver. It's an old tradition that goes back for ages and ages. A silver coin, a lump of silver, a sterling silver spoon. It really doesn't matter what the object is as long as it is silver.Personally I would go to the mint and get a silver dollar of the child's birth year.(99.99 proof) It would be a memento for the child all of her/his life. It would grow old with him/her every year of the child's life right along with him/her.

A gift card to the local gorcery store...she will always need something, along with a card...maybe offer to go to the store or help with house hold chores during the first few weeks :)

Diapers. Every baby needs them, and every parent appreciates not having to spend an extra $20 for a pack of them.
