My boyfriend would like to teach, but he will only have a History degree. Won't most impoverished areas hire people with undergrads and pay them to attain their masters in education? Do you know any teachers that don't have an undergrad in education?

with a history degree he can get into the credential program at a local university. there, it would only take two or three semesters to attain a teaching credential in hist, gov, geog, and econ. ONCE he is in a program, he can get, maybe, an internship to teach while getting the credential. he will have to do student teaching at some point. they may or may not make him quit a position in order to accomplish this. counter productive, i know but becoming a teacher is a pain in the rear, the hoops they make you jump through! he will also have to take a test to prove he is highly qualified. unless his university issued a statement upon graduation that he is highly qualified in this subject area. good luck. i have a history degree too and considered being a hist, gov, econ, geog, teacher, but i did special education instead. i wish him the best.

Pretty much anyone with an undergrad degree can teach K-12 as long as they pass state certification. Check the requirements set by your state board of education.

You need your teaching certificate. You don't necessarily need a Masters. Call the school district he's interested in and ask them what qualifications he'd need.

He can also start as a substitute teacher to get his foot in the door.
