I don't know that this statistic is accurate, but it is not unusual for people to 'find god' when in prison...also, many prisons give some special privileges to inmates who are involved with religious groups as that 'shows' an intent towards 'rehabilitation'. In other words, the inmates are playing the system for easier time and skewing the results of the polling.

Were are you getting your facts as to the percentage of Atheists in America? How was this number deturmined? Was there a national declaire your religion vote that I missed? If there was not how do you know that the numbers are accurate and not just man made crap?
My next questiion is if Christianity is so great and their God is so good why are ANY Christians in jail? If they can't obey mans laws should we really expect them to obey the laws of a pink monkey?

How about, they are all just 'good old boys' and 'good time charlies' and if you should ask them, yeah, they are innocent and 'railroaded' or framed somehow. I used to work as a counselor on the CETA program inside a medium security facility for men until the program was fazed-out. Those guys were clever and deviant, but not smart. ; )

Saying you've repented and found religion goes down well with the parole board. It should be noted that the great majority of criminals leave prison and re-offend. I say that just in case any deluded Christians thought that the religiosity of convicts was genuine.

Because when people have been reduced to nothing they begin to look up! The hopeless man starts to rebuild his hope and his faith...Some times a person has to lose everything before they realize they are not alone in this world and that there is a greater power than himself.

Because people typically become religious in prison. You'd start praying too if you had to share a cell with Bubba.
