Call up the Better Business Bureau and Health Department first. Then going in the shop look around ask question. If you know what you want ask if anyone there specializes in that type. But for health you would want to see if they wear gloves and have clean needles and if the shop is just plan clean itself.

Clean and safe shop, good hygienic practice and quality equipment. Look for overall skill of the artist and how long they've been tattooing. Be sure they can answer questions and that they are helpful. You should be generally comfortable around them and able to communicate with them your ideas and whatnot.
Price shouldn't be a deciding factor in all cases. Cheap doesn't mean good, but at the same time expensive doesn't mean it'll be any better. Take your time deciding and talk with people you see who have tattoos, ask them where they went and what they thought. If you're a first timer, hearing some testimonials will be helpful.

1) clean floors, and surfaces in the work space
2) a working autoclave with a log of monthly spore tests up to date
3) certificates showing completion of a bloodborne pathogens class
4) single use needles, I prefer disposable tubes.
5) use of barrier film on all work surfaces
6)gloves and hand washing!
7) A great portfolio, but also make sure to watch them tattoo a few people. Some unethical scratchers will steal photos for a portfolio.
8) References, are thier other clients happy and get repeat buisiness?
9) a friendly profesional attitude. Nobody wants to get a tattoo from an asshole.

Cleanliness, and overall organization of the shop, Photos of previous customers work, referrals from previous customers, low pressure atmosphere. I have spent as much as a month hanging around a tattoo studio, before committing to having work done. Pick an artist you feel comfortable with, remember a tattoo is forever, and should not be rushed into.

You want to look for cleanliness, sterilization, neat, experience, friendliness, etc. Anything that is along these lines is what you want to look for. Also check out their reputation. Ask around about them, talk to anyone that has had some work done there and ask about their experience in that shop.
Hope this helps and happy tattooing!

Check with your local Health Department to see there are any complaints against the place. Check it out for yourself, is it clean, do they wear gloves, do they wash their hands between customers (even if they wear gloves they should be doing this). Is the equipment sterilized. Visible Health Department Inspection. Also check with the Better Business Bureau. Your life and health depend on this so don't think you are overboard.

a contemporary documentary confirmed that a million out of 20 tattoo artists are good and something produce no longer so super high quality (desperate by using the customer a volume of time after having the artwork achieved.) Do your homework and take it gradual looking! larger city, greater effective probability of finding a high quality shop.

Well first off go inside and and check the place out! Ask yourself is it clean and do I feel safe here? Do your research too, see if you can find people who have been there before and ask them! But remember everyone you ask that has been there has a different outcome so be careful! Good luck, I hope it's cute!!!

Make sure you shop around, find someplace that has good health inspection reports, sterile, find someone that has had a tattoo there before and get their feedback. And make sure you want this tattoo

recent good (passed) health inspection and satisfied customers. I have 18 tattoos from my cheek down to my ankle, mostly on my back. Only one bad tattooist so far. I have 8 more to go before back piece is complete.
