I would like to completely erase my hard drive and 'start over' - re load windows, etc. I tried to run FORMAT C: from the dos screen, but it wouldn't let me because it said there was still some software - I'm guessing it was the Windows operating system. How do I 'start over' in order to erase the bugs that creeped in?

It sounds like you were using CMD or the dos command box, which would prevent you from formatting while running windows.

If you have an original xp cd, you can run the installation by sticking the cd in the drive, restarting, and doing an install. One of the options is to format and start over.

If you're running Windows 2000, same thing applies.

For windows 98, you'll need a windows 98 boot disk. Once created, restart the computer, do format c:, then run the windows 98 install cd.

Good luck!

Put your windows cd in and follow the onscreen prompts. Make sure your bios is set to boot from the cd drive before the HDD

If you are using XP then I am guessing you ran dos prompt through XP which isn't a real dos and you cannot format a HDD when you are using it (ie running windows)

So if you have the windows CD then you can easily format your HDD using that CD as it will ask you if you want to format before you install windows

hope this helps.
