Its a throw back to the OLD English language. Listen closely and you will see a great similarity between Southern "twang" and the English pronunciation of the Old English language.

Other than that, it is probably a mixture of ALL the European languages since American English comes from all those countries. Some American words are, German, Irish, Dutch, English, Swiss and all the other countries in Europe and some are even Spanish. Good luck. Pops

I know that a lot of Scots and Irish settled in the Appalachian region, so the accent developed out of their way of speaking. As for the rest of the South, I believe it was also settled by Irish and Scots, as well as many other people, so the varying languages and accents all mingled and contributed.

brain cells get heated up, take longer to work, send messages slowly to brain, which also responds slower, so words drag out
