I have found that if you can look at a profession, and see some individuals in that professions doing really well financially, you can't blame the profession....
Having said that, the top 3 reasons ME sucks is:
- Nobody can even come close to comprehending, let alone appreciating, the subtleties of doing the job well, except other ME's. So - ME tends to look like a self-adoration society (which it is not).
- ME's cannot do anything themselves; they must rely on others (vendors, sub-contractors, shop folks) to accomplish their work. This leads to many degrees of freedom (only civil engineering has as many). The least DOF's is in "computer engineering", where it is just the "engineer" and a keyboard, and nothing else (I quoted "computer engineering" because anybody who thinks this is actually engineering is self-delusional)
- Given that nobody can comprehend what this job is (in addition to design, it is coordinating vendors, baby-sitting purchasing and quality people, and doing other's jobs), it is the easiest position to under-budget and understaff. The ME's are the first one's in the plant (to catch the shop guys before they get too grouchy) and the last to leave (had to stay for that 4:30 meeting that marketing called, because they don't even show up for work until 10:45)
There - I think that about captures it....

Having been in Electronic Engineering for many years I would say that ME sucks because it's boring. Anybody can build/fix something that's just metal and gears. It's the electronics that make the mechanical things work. Now that's interesting. It's like figuring out what's going on inside someone's head. You don't actually see the electrons flowing but you know they're there. And the possibilities are unlimited.

Mechanical Engineering doesn't suck that bad...but there are a few drawbacks to having the knowledge of a mechanical engineer: for one, it is not an electrifying topic of discussion at parties; two, it won't help you program you VCR, you will just know how it is built from alpha to omega; and three, you will never reach nirvana pondering the principles of Mechanical Engineering, like you might if you were think about the perfect molecular symmetries that exist in seemingly chaotic nature...snowflakes!

It only sucks because you aren't happy with it. I know lots of ME's who are good at their jobs and are happy with them.
Many folks are unhappy with their jobs becuse they are not good at them. Others just ended up in that job, without really wanting to.
Maybe the job environment is what makes you unhappy. I had a job where the immediate boss thought the way to break in a young engineer was to break him. He made life hell. I learned all I could from that outfit, and moved on to another.
A horrible thought is that you might not be happy at any job. That is scarey. I slung hash, was a firefighter, spent some time in the Navy, started a flying school, ended up as a fire protection engineer, I was happy with all but the Navy.
I hope yours is not an attitude problem, and that you can resolve it.

Mechanical Engineering sucks because:
1) M.E.s always say, "I can build a better tester than they can. We'll make it ourselves." And then before long I have 14 projects, no finished testers and an M.E. who keeps assuring me that when he does get it done it will be better and cheaper than we could have bought it.
2) Instead of fixing the problem, we just make M.E.s create a test to sort out the bad parts. Thus, it enables crappy suppliers, crappy designs and crappy materials.
3) On weekends and at night, whatever the M.E. was fixing breaks again five minutes after he leaves the plant parking lot or turns off his cell phone.

Mechanical Engineering sucks because of the missed opportunity of becoming an Electrical Engineer.

1. You'll never get rich
2. Chicks dont "dig it"
3. There is more work than we can all do.
But I would like to add, I've done fairly well in this profession for 24 years.
