I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The word has more then one meaning. One meaning is a light sensor that is used in alarm systems. The eye senses the beam of light from the source, and if broken, an alarm goes off. The green tube from the old days was a tube with either a round or a rectangular glowing green area, with a small gap in the middle. It was used as a type of meter. One example was when tuning a radio, the gap would get bigger the better you were tuned to the radio station.

Are you talking about the "magic eye?"

If so, it is 1940s technology.... it is a crude form of metering device. You look at the shadowey glow of neon like light to see if you were tuned into the radio station correctly. Its main use were as tuning meters on stereo systems.
