Some new cars now come with the satellite radio pre-installed. But if it's an optional extra, how much should one pay given that both providers are subsidizing the radios to get the monthly fee income?

I had Sirius radio installed. The radio came from Radio Shack for like $50 and the subscription is about $12 a month for a year. So, I would think 700 is pretty crazy...

My new Honda came standard with XM. I tried it for the ninety days and found the content just OK. What I didn't like was the sound quality. If the satellite radio is standard, even the subscription is expensive. Spend that $700 on a better system, not satellite radio.

i work at a future shop and the rage from sat radio prices are 99 - 399 for the unit but the instalation only goes to 100$, which hardwires everything to your car, im not sure how much private shops charge but we charge 70-99$...700 is way too much

It will be cheaper to get it installed yourself, however if you do decide to install it yourself you will have a separate device hooked on to your radio. When it is installed by the factory in a new car you can use it through your regular radio. You probably can get one installed for a couple hundred dollars.

I paid ~$75 for the hardware and $75 to have it installed. This is a fully integrated system with my head unit, so I don't have to have a gaggle of boxes and wires scattered around my dash. It would be cheaper if you have a box on yr dash.
