You have to really take a lot more about your lifestyle into consideration before you can really answer this question properly. You need to decide how active you are and how much time you have to entertain a dog, then research breeds that match your lifestyle. Check out the akc.org site to research the various breeds.

What I would reccomend then is some sort of retriever. Your son would probably love to take the dog to the park etc. and throw and bat for the dog. I have had several dogs that loved fetch and playing. Some ideas...

Golden Retreiver
German Shepard
Black Lab

These 3 dogs are easily trainable and very family oriented. Also additionally a German Shepard would be very loyal to a young boy as they are protective. Good luck getting a new puppy!

Black Labs are great with kids.... My dog and son run circles around each other trying to get the ball from each other. The dog is also very good at catching a ball mid-flight. I would not recommend a weiner dog ...not very good with kids at all.

If your only requirement is a dog who plays ball, then you have a lot of options. Golden Retrievers LOVE to fetch and run and play, and they are excellent dogs. But they do shed. Same with Labs.

I would go to the pound and rescue a dog who's only chance may be you. From what I have seen rescued dogs they seem to understand and be greatful when finally in a home, their are many resources avaiable you can try http://www.petfinder.com/ for a dog in your area or try running a search for rescues, there are also specific breed rescues it you are looking for a certain type. By adopting/rescuing you would be saving a life and also showing your son a great example. :)

Don't breed or buy while shelter pets die.

I would recommend a Lab. They tend to be quite hyper until the age of three, but I think your six year old would be able to handle it. (I would not recommend a younger Lab to someone who has small children for this reason.) Lab's tend to be loyal and loving. They have a reputation for being great with children. They love to retrieve, and would make a great ball companion for your son.

Go to the pound and check out all the dogs. Those dogs get destroyed daily because too many people pay too much money for pets.

I am not sure; I saw some one else put Beagles down. I have two Beagle and if I throw a ball, frisbee etc.......they just look at me. I cannot get them to chase the ball no matter what I do.

I used to breed labradors and as puppies like the GOLDEN retreiver they are soooo fun lovin'and as they grow with ur son they will become HIS greatest protector....pits/rotties(I raised one too) theyre a little different...but my personal preference would be a chocoate lab or a goldie...good luck

Boxers are definitely the best breed! They are great with kids and very loyal. Also one of the smartest breeds as well. Very easy to train. I could go on for ever. Definitely check them out!
