Mostly because of Mr. Cruise's diatribe against psychiatry when being interviewed by Matt Lauer and his criticism of Brooke Shields for seeking psychiatric help for her post-partum depression and that scientology was very much a major factor in the failure of his previous marriages.
He wears scientology on his sleeve. Others who follow it are much more private about it.

Because that's what is selling right now ! The media is a multi billion dollar machine and celebrity hype is probably their biggest commodity.
Tom Cruise is an international celeb. He is therefore highly visable. His religion just happens to be Scientology. If they didn't have that they would find something else.
Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson, Britiny Spears.....it's constant and continuous.
The media's main activity is building people then they can target them and try to knock em down.
It's a sport that entertains the masses, not that different from the games the Romans provided for their people to distract them from their own issues with their government and lives.
The main difficulty they have with Tom Cruise is that no matter what they throw at him he continues to be successful and do what he thinks is right.
Bit like the Dixie Chicks, he just won't shut up. and in his case,
they can't seem to get rid of him. He just won't go away, it's very annoying, cos he's not playing the game.
But they don't really care that much as long as they continue to rake in the $'s. Actually that's really all they care about. I assure you Tom Cruise and Scientology are not under any "scrutiny" beyond how much money the media can make from "creating" some contraversy.
That's their game. And it is a popular game for the "masses" it seems.Keeps them occupied and misdirected which is the main intention.
Personally I'd rather play a more contructive game.

Without getting into a scramble about scientology (you can look up the sketchy details yourself on Wikipedia), I assume that Tom Cruise comes under fire more than others because he's well-known. I mean, you can't say Steve Smith, from Littlebutt, Arkansas is under public scrutiny because the public has no idea who he is. But scrutiny is not just the price of fame - it's also the price of jumping around and acting like a moron. Cruise just did it in front of millions, instead of a few hundred in the mall.

They aren't the only ones under scrutiny. They just happen to be the most famous right now. There are several other scientologists: John Travolta, Isaac Hayes, and others. I assure you - Scientology is under intense scrutiny for the reasons that will be made clear if you peruse the website "Operation Clambake" which exposes Scientology for what it truly is. What I don't understand is why Tom Cruise doesn't just have the church adapt to a more modern way of doing things - with his money and power they would have a real hard time saying no to him.

Basically... because Tom Cruise makes a fool out of himself on national television. As you should know, when a celeb does something utterly ridiculous, people want to see more. The media obliges by sticking it's nose into anything that it can sensationalize and voilà, they find that Scientology is exceedingly easy to sensationalize. I suppose it helps that Scientology is completely wonky with it's belief in aliens and the infallibility of the "prophesies" of a science fiction writer.

Because Tom is one of the higher ranking cult leaders in Scientology and between him jumping on couches like a 2 year old and his bad mouthing his old friends for using medications, he brings the celebrity part of the religion to the fore front all the time. Other celebs are well-know with the beliefs as well. Look at John Travolta and wife. That's just one other couple who are well-known for believing in this crap.

Besides the Oprah incident, Tom refused to be a good sport by threatening to sue Comedy Central if they air the South Park Closet episode. He also threatened to not promote MI3 if they air that episode. He's just acting like a spoiled brat, and a bad example to scientologists. No wonder people think scientologists are nuts.

The only tomkat I care about is that little grey fellow who comes to my door for food. And yes, scientology is a crock.

Because the squeeky wheel always gets the grease or in this case the blame, and in Tom's case, he is the most vocal one about scientology and is just as misled by that cult as the rest of it's followers.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Because Tom shot his mouth off to Matt Lauer about what Brooke Skeilds should be doing about her post-partum depression...even though he'll NEVER have the slightest clue what it's all about, due to the fact that he's a MAN and can't get pregnant. Religiosity + Arrogance = Tom Cruise.
So, it's well deserved.
