I study French philology & I do Spanish as contrastive studies; so as a non-native speaker of both who still does them professionally, I can say that French is more difficult.
That's because it is further from Latin than any other Romance language, so it has experienced many changes (think how you pronounce, for instance).
Spanish grammar is one of the best in the world, and when you are making your way through Imparfait du subjonctif & Passe simple in French, Spanish looks like a walk in paradise (I have an exam today, so I'm a bit uptight bout French;-))
Anyway, both are cool, that's why I'm doing them, but I feel more confident about my Spanish since I've studied it for a longer time.
Start with Latin; get your grammar straight, translate the classics, then move on to modern Romance languages. You should feel the language that matches your self.

I live in the US, and Spanish is so common here. I picked up Spanish years ago. I prefer it because it's something I've spoken since I was a small child. I have tried to learn French but it's just too darn hard for my tongue to master.
