Depends on your financial status and how much $ you have to spend.
If I were buying a good, reliable car right now, the best thing going for years and years now are either a Honda or Toyota.
These are reliable, they run a long time and the resale value on them is great. Others here will suggest many cars, but these two have a long history of being great cars, that are affordable.

Go with a Honda Accord, New or used cant go wrong. I bought an 06, love it to death, i already owe less than what it is worth, depretiation on it is awsome (coming off 2 gms that both dropped like rocks when it came to resale) I have not had a single problem in the year i have owned it and i have had friends that had them in the 200-300k mile range and still no problems. Hondas are built to last, so go with an accord.

I agree with you, ford sucks really bad, My family for awhile has gone with toyota, they last forever and most of the time only have minor problems like all other cars, ask ppl, they'll tell you toyota is very reliable, but if toyota doesn't suit you, then i Also have a thing for chevy's, Chevrolet. But your good with toyota for sure, cheap and reliable, and good on gas!

My wife has had terrific luck with the Lumina. Her first Lumina was a '91 with 170,000 when it was totalled. She now has a '97 that was bought off lease @ 30,000 miles. It now has 190,000 plus miles and besides tires and oil changes-she hasn't spent $1,200 on repairs. Not bad in my book!

depends on what you are looking for
with 2 kids and 1 in planning and my wifes SUV dying i had to find something, affordable yet roomy
we ended up leasing a Chevy Impala - we absolutly love it. we got the lowest model which still has all power and cd and the same engine with plenty of a** behind it
