Here is a secret. It is the ice. You can have your fridge make the ice but it is not as pure as say bagged ice from the local store. Or better yet make up some cubes using a good bottled water. NOW with the base down lets get to mixing.
Start with a good Gin. I would suggest Sapphire Blue. Pour 1.5 oz of this gin, over the pre-described ice in an 8 oz tall glass. Add a good tonic, do NOT go cheap on this either. I avoid the faygo brand and pay about $1.70 a bottle for mine. Stir this mixture and then top it off with a good slice of lime. Before you add the lime pinch some of the juices out of it into the top of the glass and then rub the lime around the rim before you place it on top of the ice.
Enjoy!

Proper amounts of each, properly mixed, and using good quality products.

Use Beefeater gin and Schweppes tonic for best results. And I would say the perfect mixture is to put 3/5 of tonic and 2/5 of gin.
But that really depends on your personal taste.
