I was going to make roast tonight but now some things have come up and i wont be home in time to make it in the oven like i usually do. I have the time now to go ahead and put it in the crock pot so i can let it cook while im gone and it be ready when i get home at about 5:00.

Just brown the roast for about 2 minutes on each side in the frying pan, then add it to the crockpot on high with seasonings, veggies, and just barely cover with water or beefstock. Should be done in about 3 hrs, depending on how thick the roast is.

Edit: Just read it needs to be ready at 5:00 - turn it on the low setting. 8 hrs should be plenty of time for it to cook, and it will be more tender if it's slower cooked!

Yes you can cook it in a crock pot, usually takes 8-10 hrs on low heat--what I do is cook it on low while I am at work (8 hr day) then when I get home I turn it to high and check it every 15 mins or so until the meat and vegies are the way I like them (meat falls apart and vegies are soft, not mashable, but not crunchy either)

now this may sound strange--but replace a 1/2c of liquid with 1/2c of cola--I think it speeds up the cooking process am not sure but, I have done this the last 6 times I have cooked a roast and it is great (you don't taste the cola when you eat it so don't worry)

Quarter an onion, cut up a few ribs of celery, a few carrots; put them in the bottom of the crockpot, salt and pepper a little, add 1/4 cup of water. Set the roast on top of the veggies, also peeled potatoes around the top of the roast, if desired, salt & pepper a little more. Cook on low for 8 hours or so, the longer it cooks, generally the more tender it becomes. I like to use chuck roast, it seems to work best. You can also make gravy right in the crockpot from the drippings. Very good & very easy meal!

i usually like to season the roast with some salt, pepper and garlic and then sear the outside of the whole thing. just make a nice brown crust on it. i then put some chopped carrots, celery and onions on the bottom of the crock pot and the roast on top of that. i use a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup with some red wine mixed in and add it to the crock pot as well. season with salt and pepper and turn the slow cooker on! i agree with the other user's suggestion to to use the reynolds crock pot liners. those things are great!!!

Brown the roast. Put it in the pot with a pack of lipton onion soup if you have it. I also dump in a bag of baby carrots, some quartered potatoes, quartered onion and can of beef broth (or water). Turn on low and let the magic begin!

You don't need to sear it -- just put it in with your potatos, carrots and onions. Add your seasonings and add water to cover the roast (for gravy later) and turn it on low. YUMMMMM

Sear in a frying pan first. Add salt pepper and spices, then on low depending on weight and how well you want it to cook. Can add vegatables too! Will be tender..
