It is racist! It comes from our Cherokee word "yonega," which means "white person." It isn't insulting in Cherokee, rather a descriptive term, but when taken out of the context of the language, it doesn't mean the same thing. Not only does it make a horrid assumption that all Americans are white, but the way it's used is insulting. Just say "Americans" or don't bother.

As a Cherokee, I don't like when people misuse my language to insult others.

Added: Aw you're just plain sweet though ;) How could I be mad at that?

Yanks is not racist because we are not one race. It has different meanings depending on where in the world you are. It is on the same level as calling the Chinese Chinks, the French Frogs, and the Japanese Nips. Given that way too many people use the term, we should just accept it and use what ever term you want to refer to them.

Well, Yanks only refers to those who live above the Mason-Dixon (Northeast USA only). So, no, I'm not offended by it as a US Citizen. If people are going to try to use it as a slur, at least get the meaning right!

I not sure that it is my husband is american and i call him a yankie all the time he does not seem to mind this phrase i have lots of american friends and i use this word a lot with them so i dont know if it is racist or detrimental

Its a shame more people do not follow their lead; why is it racist to call someone a Paki? Basically because the bloody Pakis enjoy screaming racist and saying they are descriminated against! Pathetic.
