I am a young vet, and belong and work for the VFW. Both the VFW and American Legion are great organizations. But....(I whispering here) in VFW meetings you'll get to hang out with other older vets and trade war stories and drink during meetings...(no more whispering).

I was a member of both and I think they are a joke. The whine about being denied benefits. They did nothing for me as a vet except make me hate other vets. Being a member of one or the other is a waste of time. Find your unit association if you have one and join it. For me the American Legion and the VFW was an organization of guys that wear stupid looking hats.

These guys are right they are both great. I think the American Legion is bigger and has more lodges, just because you only have to be prior service not be a war vet like the VFW, but both work hand and hand in the government and fight for the same vet rights.

Both organizations are great to join if you get involved with the total group not just the drinkers and complainers. I belong with the American Legion and love to talk to people about the Legion. We do a lot for the community, schools, and Veterans as long as we know what is needed. We are trying to get more young Veterans to come in and get involved with us to help with changes that are needed. So if you are interested, come to the American Legion in Martinsburg WV and talk with us about what you need us to help with and what you can do to help us change. See the Post Adjutant if you want to see me.

I was in a combat zone but it wasn't a war by the definitions given by the VFW I was a veteran of the Iran/Iraq tanker war where the navy cleared mines and fought the Iranian fleet but apparently I am not veteran enough for them. However my main problem with both organizations is that they are hopelessly conservative in their political activities and I wouldn't want my dues going to conservative causes. I also don't need the peer pressure to support conservative candidates so I will let both organizations wither away as their membership grows ever grayer and ever fewer.

it is continually an concern. relies upon on the state, city and bigger. in case you do not sense tender then it will be a lousey financial ruin-put up or "incorrect evening". cities which have countless chapters likely have one which it more desirable Iraq/Gulf vets. If the "club" reliable is a dork, properly he will likely no longer tell the position the Iraq vets go. Ask on the Vets middle with the VA. As to how i have self belief reading this? i opt to fasten & load on any that reason any Iraq vet ill emotions. inspite of each thing the grief I and many Vietnam Vets recieved from what we referred to as "the category of 1945", properly it really is gloomy. San Antonio my living house for years before I retired back to Colorado had large VFW's. yet i became from Southern Colorado and fit in with the Latino posts. i'm very "white bread". Now, i receives off my tail and have a check out what is going on in my small city. no longer that it must be functional you yet a minimum of i can ensure that vets on the city understand what vets places are ok. they'd ought to regulate the music, diversions, back i visit enable the persons understand as to what's up at places which will spread the note. Do enable the DAV understand if a DAV financial ruin is on your list: e mail them Nationally. i'm hoping it is one you do not belong to :-) At citadel Carson, the first 365 days of Iraq the VFW and such had a table on the PX, no longer seen one in numerous years. That tells me some thing. i'm retired so I volunteer by using some gadgets and such. besides i concept the VFW became a joke till i stumbled on the "precise" put up in my cities. i understand more desirable than some Vietnam vets are going to be saddened by using your question.
