I have naturally light brown/dark blonde hair and I've always had great look with L'Oreal Couleur Experte- those are the kits that come with both an overall hair-lightening dye and highlights. They have a gorgeous range of blonde colors and they are labeled according to the undertones they have-- so I would recommend you get one of the cool-toned colors to avoid having your hair turn brassy.
You can find the full range of colors at any Wal-Mart, and depending on if they're on sale, you can buy these kits for about $12 to $20 (more than a typical drugstore hair coloring kit, but still a fraction of the cost of getting it done professionally!)

If you have long hair, your best bet is to go to a hairdresser to make sure things turn out right. As for me, I have short hair and did it myself this way:
I bought Manic Panic Flash Lightning, in the black box, at Sally's. Mix and leave on according to directions, and check every 10 min or so for the amount of lift (color removed.) Since yours is light brown and pulls gold,(mine was chestnut and pulled orange) it may need to be left on longer than it says for light brown. Put it on the roots LAST. They take the least time to process.
After you've made sure to wash out the bleach with a good shampoo, you'll have to put on a toner. I used Clairol Born Blonde in Winsome Wheat. You'll need that, a cheap little conditioning cap and a packet of the Born Blonde crystals because you just bleached. It smells very nice, and it's extremely gentle. Put the correct amount (it's on the bottle) in your hair. It'll be purple and look like purple cough syrup, but that's perfect!
Give it 30 minutes and wash it out. That will remove any of those gold tinges. Then blow dry and you're set. To keep mine blonde, I use Colorsilk on the entire thing once a month, Ultra Light Sun Blonde in my case. Wait a month or so before you do that after the first bleaching.
Good luck! My results were good--they matched the natural platinum blonde my mother has. That was what I was trying to do--to see if I could actually get it that light.

First let me say you can dye your hair but it isn't a word we really use anymore. It doesn't turn it orange if you use the right formula. Saying this I would go to a hairstylist to get it done. Bleach, depending on how light brown you hair is, is an unnecessary evil. If you want a dark blonde, color works just fine. i tdepends on how many levels you want your hair lifted. Go to a sytlist and avoid the possible mistakes that can happen. We see it all too often when people try to do it themselves at home.

Go to Sally's, not Wal-Mart. If you don't want your hair to be orange, pick a color with a neutral, or ashy tone. Don't pick anything with a warm or gold tone. If your hair is light brown, you shouldn't have a problem lifting it a few levels to achieve the color you desire. Follow instructions carefully. I wouldn't suggest trying to highlight your hair yourself. It will look better and you will have easier maintenance if you choose and all over color.

Why change your hair color? Blonde is sooooo last season (spring - summer).
What is in this season is a medium ash brown, or a red penny color, try coloring it blonde at the beginning of next summer not at the end.
The reason I am saying this is because designers are gearing toward attire for brunettes or reds. Always has been for years!

Highlights with the cap is best for you, before you go for highlights, why not dye your hair blonde previously ( 15 days before) ?
I tried it and my hair came almost the same colour. Always try Ash blonde to get rid of orange tones.

For a good color definetely go to a hair dresser. The over the counter products will never give you the same results especially from changing your hair color to a drastic color.

your hair will color blond very well, but i would get highlights and lowlights so it blends better with your outgrowth. i would also highly recommend a hair stylist, because you can consult with them and have their professional opinion. if they mess it up, which is highly unlikely, then they would have to fix it for free. just go to an experienced hair stylist.
