ALL big problems like this are the direct result of human overpopulation.. until we control our own numbers we should stop complaining about the results of our own growth and start dealing with the cause

Overfishing certain stocks of fish has been a common occurrence since the early 1900's. Contrary to opinions that this is due to overpopulation, over-fishing is caused by a variety of factors that are mostly, economic, social and political. The biggest problem is that different nations compete for the same fish, so there is no mechanism to actually manage many fisheries.


Thare are other are numerous other problems as well, including improvements in technology that enable the capture of increasingly larger numbers of fish, widespread use of destructive fishing techiques such as bottom trawling and use of explosives, massive amounts of wasted fish called 'bycatch', trends in people's diets, destruction of coastal and estuarine systems by pollution and coastal development, and fluctuations in ocean conditions and fish population sizes that make it difficult for fish populations to recover.
