The gift card to Walmart is very nice. I have been in dire straits and been thrilled for a gift card.

The gift card is a great idea, since the new mother will have many needs to fill, but I'd also get her a little something for her as a person, not just a mother. A little reminder that she is more than that. Perhaps some perfume or a gift certificate to a spa for a manicure/pedicure. You might want to avoid a full body massage, since she might be uncomfortable about her body at this stage.

I also like the idea of the gift card, because only the family knows where it is most needed. I also think that watching the baby so mama can catch a nap would be a wonderful thing, I remember my bones being tired when my babies were newborns...I know that some churches will also organize meals to be brought to the family, so they don't have to worry about that.

A gift card would be nice. Also a couple of homemade coupons from her to you. For example: "Good for One Free Evening Babysitting", "Good for One Shopping Trip", "Mother's Helper -- Redeem Coupon for Help with Housecleaning, Laundry, etc".

I am a mom of three. You know what the BEST thing you could do? Go and offer be with them, and have them take a NAP! Or do her dishes for her, or a load of laundry. The mom will probably say 'no thanks', but keep on pushing...we need the help so badly. Tell her that it will make YOU feel good to help her out.

You should be able to find local groups to help her with the material needs. Continue to support her with your friendship. It sounds like you are already covering that part.

Merry Christmas!!!

Go to a women's shelter. They should be able to help out with all of those needs and you won't have to pay much (if anything) for them at all, or try consignment shops.
