Take good notes, read your textbook. If you have any questions make sure to ask your teacher. Also don't wait until the last minute to study or do assignments. If you study throughout the semester it is much easier to do well on exams, and papers are much easier if you start as soon as you get the assignment. I try to be completely prepared for tests one day prior so I don't have to stress the night before, just go over the notes and sleep easy.

The key to studying is RETENTION. Different people do it differently. Some are blessed with extremely good memory. But mere mortals aren't. So the best way to reproduce what you learnt is to UNDERSTAND what you are studying and NOT MEMORIZE stuff.

One another thing that helps is writing down what you learn. So that you can retain it better. I can tell you from personal experience that this is immensely helpful.

And also try to form ACRONYMS with important points which can later be developed in a more elaborate manner.

Math, Physics derivations and Chemistry problems, equations and Biology diagrams need to be WORKED OUT REPEATEDLY..!

And lastly there is NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK..!
